Liver failure refers to the end stage of many liver problems. In most cases, liver failure happens gradually, over many years. Liver failure is a severe condition which can threaten patient’s life.

Liver Failure Types

Liver failure is usually divided into two types, chronic liver failure and acute liver failure. Acute liver failure strikes fast. You’ll experience loss of liver function within weeks or even days. It may happen suddenly, without showing any symptoms.

Chronic liver failure develops more slowly that acute liver failure. It can take months or even years before you exhibit any symptoms. Chronic liver failure is often the result of cirrhosis, which is usually caused by long-term alcohol use.

Liver Failure Stage

– Inflammation. It is the early stage of liver failure which is inflamed.

– Fibrosis. In this stage, some part of liver tissue becomes scarred.

– Cirrhosis. Severe scarring has built up and liver function declines.

– End-Stage Liver Disease. Liver function has deteriorated to the point where the damage can’t be reversed other than with a liver transplant.

– Liver Cancer. Even though people with cirrhosis are more at risk, the development and multiplication of unhealthy cells in the liver can occur at any stage of liver failure.
